在GRE阅读中通常会出现一些较长的句子,如果不能妥善处理它们,不仅会给我们带来阅读障碍,甚至还有可能影响考试心态。其实,长难句之所以不易理解,主要是因为其中包含较多的修饰成分、句式变化或记忆组块,而这些增加了对句子理解的难度。

修饰成分
在一个句子中,修饰成分可以包括定语、状语等表示修饰的短语和从句。汉英语言之间的一个明显差异就是修饰成分的位置:汉语习惯于修饰语前置;英语习惯于修饰语前后放置,并且以后置为主。
举个例子:“一个又红又大产自山东的苹果”,修饰成分“一个又红又大产自山东” 都放在了“的”前面。
而英语的表达则为:
An apple red, big and produced in Shandong province
A red, big apple produced in Shandong province
其中red, big作为相对较短的定语,放在前后位置均可,但如果叠加produced in Shandong province就要放在被修饰词apple后面了。
接下来我们看出现在GRE阅读中的一个句子:
His favorite rhetorical strategy was to expose the hypocrisy of those who, while professing adherence to the ideals of democracy and equality of opportunity, condoned slavery and racial discrimination.
下划线部分都是修饰语,即定语从句,而这个从句就是放在被修饰词后面。在翻译时,把定语从句前置理解即可,“他最喜欢的辩论策略是暴露那些表面尊崇民主理想和平等机会但却包容蓄奴和种族歧视的伪君子。”
所以,在遇到较多修饰语的长难句时,要找到修饰成分,然后翻译时,把修饰成分前置到被修饰词之前即可。
句式变化
英文句式形态,可以整体分为一般句式和特殊句式。特殊句式中大体包括三类:省略句、倒装句和强调句。在特殊句式中,如果出现类别叠加,就会增大句式难度。
例如:Could Achilles help us were he here now? 这句话当中既有疑问句的倒装,还有虚拟语气的倒装和省略。如果变成陈述句的完整句则为:Achilles could help us if he were here now.
一起来看在GRE阅读中的长难句:
These points may seem obvious, but had Martin given them more attention, his analysis might have constituted a more convincing rebuttal to those critics who dismiss Douglass’s ideology as a relic of the past.
划线部分一个就是倒装加省略的一个虚拟语气从句,正常语序是Martin had given them more attention.
所以,常见的虚拟语气的倒装和省略,要掌握到清晰准确的程度上,就可以对于较多句 式变化的句子解析清楚。如下三个例句供参考:
Achilles could help us were he here now. = Achilles could help us if he were here now.
Athena would have met Hermes had she come earlier. = If you had come earlier, you would have met him.
Should Thetis ask, Hephaestus would no doubt lend a hand. = If Thetis should ask, Hephaestus would no doubt lend a hand.
记忆组块
为了让大家能够更容易理解“记忆组块”,先举一个通俗易懂的例子:学开自动挡的车时,新学员需要关注路况、油门、刹车、方向盘、后视镜和挡杆,通常会出现“手忙脚乱”的场景。然而,如果只让新学员控制方向盘,则会更加“风平浪静”一些。引申到长难句中则可以理解为:在一句话中,如果包含的角色比较多,读者就会感觉这个长难句是很难被厘清的。
例如:
While Martin stresses Douglass’s antiracist egalitarianism, he does not adequately explain how this aspect of Douglass’s thought fits in with his espousal of the liberal Victorian attitudes that many present-day intellectuals consider to be naive and outdated.
在这句话中,实际上包含了五个人的观点,还隐藏了未露名的文章作者的态度,共六个角色。我们先来罗列这六个角色及其观点:
Martin stresses Douglass’s idea.
The author deems that Martin does not adequately explain an aspect.
Racists were against egalitarianism.
Douglass espoused the liberal Victorian attitudes.
Victorian people had certain attitudes.
Many present-day intellectuals consider Victorian attitudes to be naive and outdated.
当这样看时非常清晰易懂的,但把它们都塞到一个句子里,就感觉“手忙脚乱”了。其实,解决办法也非常清晰,就是像上面例子一样,把长难句内部包含的各个角色和观点提炼出来,单独对话并厘清各自的观点,就可以搞定这类GRE长难句了。
